South Padre Island view from the Lighthouse

Port Isabel Lighthouse

Today, only five historic lighthouses are left in the Texas coasts along the Gulf of Mexico. The others that have stood the test of time beaconing light from afar had been damaged or demolished. Of these five lights, only one is open to the public, for a very affordable fee – the Port Isabel Lighthouse. It was constructed in 1852 at 57 feet tall and had since undergone repairs, and recently, an overall renovation. It is located along Highway 100 which service South Padre Island.

Skywatch Friday: Clear Skies over South Padre Island.
Scenic Weekends: From the Lighthouse.

It was a beautiful day with clear skies, so we stopped by to check it out and climb to the top. The views from the top of the tower – the surrounding town of Port Isabel, the bridge connecting the mainland to the island of South Padre, as well as the South Padre Island Resorts and Hotels and the beautiful ocean, were exhilarating. Enjoying the ocean breeze alone gives you a sense of peace and calm.

Port Isabel Lighthouse State Historic Site is the 2nd smallest park in the state of Texas, the smallest being Acton State Historical Park in Hood County.

  1. Lovelygishi, I love lighthouses and when I first saw the thumbnail of your shot on Skywatch Friday I thought this was Owl’s Head Lighthouse in Maine but as it turns out I was wrong. I enjoyed taking a peek at your photos and this might be my first Texas lighthouse to see. Have a good weekend!
