Bolivar Peninsula is accessible by ferry from Galveston Island. From the ferry decks, a lighthouse would be visible. It was catching to the eye even from a distance because of its dark colors against the sea in front of it from our vantage point.
Link and I got off the ferry and drove on Hwy 87 of the island. That same lighthouse was located not too far from the port in Bolivar Peninsula. Because of the highway curves, it would be easy to drive pass it and miss it .
The historic Bolivar Point Lighthouse has been standing 117 feet tall since 1872. It is 145 years old (in 2017)! It was in navigation aid service for 61 years before being retired in 1933. It is so amazing that it survived major hurricanes in the past. In 1947, the lighthouse became a private property. It has not been maintained. It is not open to the public.
